Interventional cardiology relies on catheters and small incisions instead of traditional surgery. At Inova Heart and Vascular Institute interventional cardiology deals specifically with advanced, minimally invasive cardiac treatments.
One example of interventional cardiology is a directional coronary atherectomy (DCA). A therapeutic procedure used to open blocked heart arteries and restore blood flow. A small, mechanically driven cutter at the tip of the catheter shaves off plaque or cholesterol build-up, collects it and removes it from the arteries upon withdrawal.
Today’s interventional procedures greatly expand the treatment options available to Inova cardiologists and their patients. Interventional cardiology is the umbrella for many procedures like
angioplasty,
balloon valvuloplasty,
coronary stent implant, directional coronary atherectomy.
