Heart attacks are the leading cause of death for men and women worldwide.
A heart attack, also known a myocardial infarction, is the interruption of blood supply to a part of the heart, causing heart cells to die.
Heart attacks are often caused by
coronary artery disease, a condition in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside of the coronary arteries. Eventually, the plaque can block the flow of blood to the heart.
While some heart attacks are “silent,” without symptoms, most have classic warning signs such as sudden chest pain (typically relating to the left arm or left side of the neck), shortness of breath, nausea and sweating.
Speed is key with a heart attack. With each passing minute, more heart tissue loses oxygen and deteriorates or dies. It is important to
call 911 right away if someone you know may be experiencing a heart attack .
