Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)

Inova cardiologists perform intravascular ultrasounds (IVUS) during a cardiac catheterization to provide "inside out" views of the coronary arteries using sound waves. This is similar to an echocardiogram.

Using a miniature transducer, a cardiologist acquires an incredibly clear picture of the coronary arteries and any potential blockages. IVUS helps the cardiologist select the best treatment options or to evaluate the success of treatment with more certainty than angiography or X-rays.
