How it works

  • Patients are either referred by their physician or can self-refer to the Inova Cardiovascular Genomics Center.
  • We work with you and your insurance company to ensure coverage of your clinical visits, testing and genetic counseling.
  • We will provide results of the tests to you and your doctor along with recommendations for how your cardiovascular care should be managed based on the results of your genetic testing.
  • If there is an indication or interest in having other family members screened or tested, we can discuss this at your visit as well and schedule separate appointments for them as needed.

What does my CV Genomics appointment include?

Your visit will include a health history, physical examination, and interview with a medical geneticist and genetic counselor. A comprehensive family history also will be taken.

After a thorough counseling on the risks and benefits of genetic testing, and if you are still interested, we can perform appropriate blood work for genetic testing. We may refer you for additional studies as indicated, for example a Heart MRI, stress test, electrocardiogram or echocardiogram.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most insurance carriers will cover the initial clinic visit and genetic counseling. We will work with you and your insurance provider to ensure all ordered tests are covered or out-of-pocket expenses are minimized.

What kinds of information will I get from this visit?

You will learn about your risk for certain inheritable cardiovascular conditions and whether certain genetic findings are playing a role in your disease.

Can I take part in a research study at the clinic?

Research is an important part of advancing the field of cardiovascular genomics. Through research we may discover novel genes associated with cardiovascular disease and develop targeted therapeutics that can be used to manage certain genetic diseases. Participation is strictly voluntary, but appreciated. Overall you will receive the same high-quality medical care regardless of your decision to participate.
