Inova Heart and Vascular Institute is the largest heart attack care provider in Northern Virginia. Each year we treat hundreds of patients with the most serious type of heart attack called ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI, which is caused by a completely blocked heart artery.
Our emergency teams care for the most acute cases, including AirCare helicopter transfers from other hospitals within a 200-mile radius in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland.
Inova Fairfax Hospital, home to the region's only Level 1 trauma center, was recognized with a Silver Award as part of the ACTION Registry, an outcomes-based national program designed to improve care for high-risk heart attack patients. Inova Fairfax Hospital was the only hospital in Virginia to earn a Silver Award.
National guidelines suggest a goal of 90-minutes from the time a patient arrives in the emergency room until receiving a procedure to open clogged arteries. Inova Heart and Vascular Institute consistently surpasses this standard and is now pursuing a more aggressive goal of 60 minutes.
Two other programs help ensure timely, effective treatment for all heart attack patients:
- LifeNet: Inova Alexandria Hospital was the first hospital in Virginia to pilot this program that sends patient information from the ambulance to the physicians in the emergency room.
- Arctic Sun: Inova Heart and Vascular Institute is among an elite group of hospitals in the nation to develop a method for cooling the body to prevent injury to the brain.
The success of our heart attack program is also demonstrated by the fact that we have one of the country's lowest mortality rates.
