A heart transplant is a surgical procedure in which a patient's diseased heart is replaced with a healthy heart from a donor.

Generally, patients considered for a heart transplant have already tried other treatments and may have been hospitalized more than once for heart failure. Heart failure is considered "end stage" when other treatments (such as medicine, implanted devices or surgery) have failed to relieve symptoms.

For decades, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute physicians have been at the forefront of medical advances in treating heart failure – from minimal symptoms to advanced disease and heart transplantation. Each year we see more than 1,800 heart failure patients.

Inova as a leader in heart transplantation

With the introduction of new immunosuppressive drugs and the development of improved surgical techniques, heart transplantation remains a widely accepted therapy for patients with end-stage heart disease. Our surgeons work with the Inova Transplant Center which has been a pioneer in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, establishing its Heart Transplant Program in 1986.

The program was responsible for the area's first heart transplant and has launched many other innovative programs, including home-based monitoring of medication management for heart failure patients, ventricular assist device (VAD) and lung transplant programs.

  • We perform nearly 45 heart transplants a year
  • According to the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients (SRTR), our 3-year patient survival rates are better than expected
  • We performed the first heart transplant in the DC metro region in 1986, and the first total artificial heart implantation in the DC metro region in 2013
  • Learn more about ventricular assist device – VAD / LVAD, sometimes referred to as a "bridge to transplant" treatment option
